I like to delve into the deep meaning of things. You can't literally say what is there. You don't reach it with one painting so you go on to reach a higher level. I think life is like that that you keep growing to become more human. Whether or not you paint, you seek containment of extremes. You could call these landscapes from inside out. But this work also gives ecstasy, happiness. So if you want to be happy you should paint!

You have to translate it into a new form. I look for a way to detach it from reality. To get it away from just being a picture maybe I'm wary of having it just become a "nice" still-life. But sometimes an arrangement is so beautiful, that you think: Who cares! I'll just paint it as it is. I use theatrical situations. And you have to ask yourself what are they doing, where are they going and what is their relationship to each other? you're telling a story, which is more tiring than painting a simple pot.

Libbe Venema, 1937-1994
Why does someone paint? That's hard to explain You could say it's compulsive, you can't stop It's like having a cup of coffee; it has to be emptied. It has to be put on paper. I myself cannot paint without reality. The things around me are so essential and create so many questions, that when you start to paint they continue to fascinate you. I don't believe in "Christian" chairs, pens or paintings. But the essence of your faith: God as Creator and Maintainer of everything must have some influence on what you do. When you're dealing with cancer it doesn't mean your paintings are also infected. Suddenly you notice flowers blooming and observe details you never saw before. You become much more sensitive. You experience a sunset in a totally new way.

If you see something like that on a beach you often visit it gives you a jolt: This does not belong here. That disturbing feeling motivated me to do something. At the time I wrote: I want to do something. But I saw, to my surprise, that a hole can take the shape of a human being. If there is one form on the earth, a being which has to do with the brokenness of creation with a messed-up world it is man, who has caused and maintained it. I myself am a hopeful person, in spite of setbacks. But how do you paint that? Without producing kitsch?
